This is Rupert (so called after the tongue-in-cheek nickname given to officers by enlisted men) – he’s a brand new Royal Enfield Classic 500 and is our (Gusto Motorbikes) first Military Edition dealer special that we have created in conjunction with Ian Murray Motorcycles in Edinburgh.
This model lends itself particularly well to the military look, not just because of its battle green paintwork, but also because of its rugged and practical setup which makes it very suitable as an all-road / adventure bike. This is no idle boast as Royal Enfield’s Indian heritage is founded upon building bikes under license for the Indian Army and having them evolve into extremely rugged and practical machines that are very user-friendly, cost-effective and fun to own and operate.
We’ve focused on enhancing his latent abilities and sharpening up his looks to a modest extent in order to give his new owner the pleasure of running a truly unique bike that will give years of all-terrain riding pleasure and attract admiring glances wherever he goes.
The heart of the conversion is the fitting of chunky Continental TKC80 tyres front and rear, adding a sump guard and replacing the heavy and bulky silencer with a slimline after-market version (with the down-pipe wrapped in grey heat resistant tape) – shedding bulk as well as weight and giving proper off-road capability.
A number of Indian and British accessories have been fitted – all finished in satin black powder coat / paint. These include headlamp grille, rear rack (with detachable pillion seat as an optional extra) and a small but effective rear mud flap tucked up inside the rear mudguard.
The main aesthetic changes are centered on a beautifully hand-covered “tuck and roll” leather seat in brown, supple full-grain hide executed by Marcel Miller of Miller Kustom Upholstery of the Netherlands. This is complemented by brown “Biltwell” handlebar grips. Other subtle changes include a Smiths style speedometer (with neutral, indicator and high beam warning lamps all discretely relocated), high-intensity, miniature incandescent indicators and a Miller tail light. Other cosmetic details include the convoy marker panel on the rear mudguard located just beneath the satin black painted number plate carrier.
Will come as a brand new machine and a 16 plate with full RE 2 year warranty.
